Vielsprachigkeit, Öffentlichkeit und Politische Integration: Schweizerische Erfahrungen und Europäische Perspektiven

Der Beitrag geht der Frage nach, unter welchen Bedingungen die Integration von Staaten mit unterschiedlichen Sprachen in eine suprastaatliche Organisation möglich ist. Diesbezüglich haben die Schweiz und die Europäische Union mit ähnlichen Problemen zu kämpfen. Beide Gebilde mussten und müssen in einem konfliktreichen Prozess vielsprachige, einzelstaatlich organisierte Minderheiten in ein suprastaatliches Ganzes integrieren und dabei stabile Muster der Konfliktlösung aufbauen. Die Analyse des schweizerischen Staats- und Nationsbildungsprozesses ermöglicht neue Einblicke in den Europäischen Integrationsprozess. Dabei wird die Struktur der Öffentlichkeit als zentrales Element für den Erfolg oder das Scheitern “Europas” betrachtet.     

Like father like son: Imprisonment of fathers and the psychological adjustment of sons

The present study demonstrates that profiles of children from families with imprisoned fathers were more similar to those of juvenile delinquents and less similar to the norm group than were the profiles of children from divorced families. Based on findings presented, it would not be justified to conclude that father absence and father imprisonmentper se were the causes of negative psychological reactions. Discordant family relationships before the father left the family could have primarily caused the disturbance of these children.Received Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Innsbruck, Austria. Parental influences on the development of adolescent autonomy and identity

Two studies were undertaken to examine parental influences on autonomy and identity development. In Study 1, 262 adolescents in seventh and eleventh grades were given Kurtines's autonomy measure, Simmons's identity measure, and Elder's questions regarding the adolescents' perceptions of their parents' autocratic, democratic, or permissive parenting styles. Study 2 was a replication with 168 subjects. Across both studies it was found that sex-role socialization is more influential for automony development than is either level of parental power or age. Both age and father's use of democracy were the most influential variables on identity development.Received Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. WHAT'S GOOD FOR THE GAYS IS GOOD FOR THE GANDER: MAKING HOMELESS YOUTH HOUSING SAFER FOR LESBIAN,GAY, BISEXUAL,AND TRANSGENDER YOUTH

Across the United States, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth are grossly overrepresented in the homeless youth population. These youth are at an increased risk of being victims of violence in homeless youth housing facilities. This Note examines the causes of the overrepresentation of LGBT youth in the homeless youth population. Additionally, this Note suggests the following changes to the regulation of homeless youth housing programs to make them safer for these youth: (1) placing low maximum limits on the occupancy capacity at which these programs may operate, (2) requiring that all showering facilities provide individual privacy, (3) prohibiting anti‐LGBT discrimination in the provision of services, (4) requiring nondiscrimination and sensitivity training, and (5) promoting the creation of LGBT‐specific homeless youth housing programs.
